Why eat less fat?

  • Helps to reduce your risk of heart disease
  • May help reduce risk of cancer

Ways to reduce fat in the diet:

  • Fill baked potatoes with non fat or low fat cottage cheese, baked beans
  • Switch to semi-skimmed or skimmed milk
  • Trim all visible fat from meat and remove skin from chicken and turkey
  • Use reduced fat or non fat salad dressings, mayonnaise or salad cream
  • Cut down on snacks like crisps, cakes, biscuits and pastries – try fresh or dried fruit, rice cakes, bread sticks instead
  • Try low fat frozen yoghurt or fruit sorbet instead of ice cream
  • Use reduced fat cheese in cooking, choose Edam in place of cheddar
  • Skim fat off stews and casseroles
  • Eat fish more often – cod has less saturated fat than chicken or meat
  • Fry less often – grill, microwave, boil, poach or steam instead
  • If using oil for cooking use as little as possible and choose one that is high in unsaturated fat like olive oil
  • Buy low or non fat yoghurt, eat it as it is or use it as a topping for fruit instead of cream.
